Two Pirated Shows In One Day

Well,
Today from 10am-12pm we did a show, Pirate Radio, which we've done once before I think, on a teacher workday, not sure about that. Me (Hunter), Tucker, Quinn and Henry were here.

It's 1 and a half in the morning now, so I guess its really Wednesday. Me and Tucker are here, and my mom is watching us, to make sure we don't blow up the radio station... or something like that. We played Go a bit, Tucker utterly pwned me, so I gave up. And whenever we announce we've just kinda... talk.. a lot.

I'm about to go help Tucker play a Pokemon game, so bye...

Disclamer: It's one and a half in the morning, I'm aloud (allowed, see, i can't think) to type/talk/think wrong/incorrectly/un-understandable and i can make up words :D yeah....

Time Change

Quinn's birthday

Today is Quinn's birthday, but she is in Belgium, so she will not be able to celebrate it with us here at WCOM. I plan to use this opportunity for revenge.

So for those of you who didn't listen to Feb. 11's show, Quinn and the other radio-clubbers "dedicated" the last half-hour of the show to me (because I was not there and Feb. 10 was my birthday) by playing all the longest songs they had (8-minute American Pie, Stairway to Heaven, etc.). So today, I plan to get back at Quinn by playing nothing but soundtracks, electronica, and clearchannel music that she hates.

Also, we might have my friend David come in and do commentary on the (1)Florida vs. (3)Oregon Midwest regional game. The winner of this game will move on to the Final Four. I'm rooting for Oregon.

On a completely irrelevant side note, the new Modest Mouse album came out on Tuesday. I had been looking forward to it since I heard the single, Dashboard, about a month ago. So I bought the album, and since Tuesday, Henry, Hunter and I have been listening to practically nothing else. Expect a few of their songs today.

Singing on Air

So today, there were only four people in the studio. I put on Bohemian Rhapsody and then Patrick started singing. It ended up with us singing the last half-hour of the show.

ok, since nobody posted about sunday's show i figure i should. only 4 of us were able to make it, me {quinn}, hunter, kae and nathan. over all we had a pretty good show, there were a few tech. difficulties like not turning on the 2nd mike for an hour and a half, but we managed NOT to break the station. the last half hour of the show was dedicated to annoying tucker as a birthday present, but unfortunately i dont think we got a recording so he doesnt get his gift, sorry tucker.

Two Interviews on 2/4/07

We have two live interviews scheduled for next Sunday.

In the first hour, we will have Django Haskins, a local singer/songwriter. He is the lead singer/guitarist of The Old Ceremony, a local band.
At 3pm, we will have OLSPUR, an Arizonian mixer who produces Electronic/electronica music. He has made a lifelong pledge that 50% of his proceeds will go to charity. His album ALPHA GENERATION is available pre-release on Last.FM He will be interviewed over the phone- our first time doing this. Let's hope it works.

Django Haskins

So I had lunch at the Barbeque Joint today, and right behind me in line was Django Haskins. I had emailed him earlier about a possible interview on Teen Spirit, but his reply was falsely marked as spam. Anyway, he says he'd love to come in on February 4th. Expect an interview then.

You Could Have It So Much Better

So with another $8 in iTunes Christmas money, I bought the second Franz Ferdinand album, titled "You Could Have It So Much Better". For those who don't know, Franz Ferdinand is an indie-pop band formed in 2002. They are Scottish, and play a sort of music that appeals to everyone. I think I'll play the first single from that album ("Do You Want To") on our next show.

As of today, this blog is called "the Blogocopter", possibly as a result of the popularity of a game Tucker and thousands of other people discovered this sumer. And it just kind of works, doesn't it?

In other news, we enjoyed a very successful interview with the "It's Carroboro" folks, Brian Risk, and Billy Sugarfix, who added an unforseen comic aspect to the show. Very fun.

This week (Xmas eve)'s show is being run by just me and Tucker so far, but we're hoping more people turn up. Morgan, Hunter, and possibly Boga will be here as well.

If you haven't already, I encourage you peoples to check out the U2/Green Day song, "The Saints Are Coming". What a great song.

We have a recording of our interview with Billy Sugarfix and Brian Risk, the creators of "It's Carrboro." If someone with a reliable (sorry Bojia) hosting service could email or otherwise contact us, we can put it up on the web. The file is about 30MB.

The interview went well, along with our holiday music selection. We'll probably keep our holiday selection going on next weekend too. Please, call us up with requests or even drop by with records, CDs, or MP3s, and we'll play them.

Yesterday's show went pretty well- for those of you who didn't listen, it was halloween themed, so we played "scary" music, which included the X-Files theme and the Monster Mash.

We got in the Daily Tar Heel! Check out our story, which includes quotes from some of our club members. The print version has a picture of Henry- my dad is getting copies for the whole club.

Club members: things to work on for next week-

Transitions were not so good yesterday. We're doing a fine job dropping out songs... raising volume levels for the second audio cue seemed to be a challenge
Put some energy into your announcing. We're being rather bland and speaking with a dull voice.
Come up with interview questions for ShakerMaker, a local group who we will be interviewing next weekend.

The interview went pretty well. Henry and Quinn did the interviewing while the rest of the club was on standby (literally standing by- that studio is tiny!). Feeding the Fire classifies themselves as Progressive Rock- check them out yourself.

In my opinion, the voice on many of their tracks sounds like it's influenced by Nirvana, which in turn was taken from R.E.M. Not a bad thing- the vocal effect is nice with this style of music.

Any requests for next week? I was thinking playing something by Elvis Costello.... Maybe "Radio, Radio" again?

Use AOL Instant Messanger during the show

We're trying to build a community of students that enjoy chatting with each other and the DJs while they listen to the show (streaming over the internet at www.communityradio.coop or on regular FM radio at 103.5 if you live in Chapel Hill or Carrboro).

During the show, the DJs are monitoring AIM and you can talk to them and request songs. Our AIM ID is wcomteenspirit. Add us to your list of friends and we'll add you, too. You can also chat with other teens in the area who are listening to the show.

If you are new to AIM (as I was until last week), do this:

go to aim.com
click on AIM Express on the right
Get a Free Screen Name if you don't already have one (you may have to try several different names before you get one that nobody else is using)
Login using your Screen Name and Password
If you have a popup blocker on, it won't work. Disable the popup clocker and/or add aimexpress.com to you list of allowed sites, and then go back and try to login again.
Another problem that might happen is that the AIM service is "temporarily unavailable". Try to login a couple of more times and it will usually let you in eventually. It seems to be random...anybody know what's going on with this problem?

Feeding the Fire (Band Interview)

On the October 22nd show, we hope to have a band interview with Chapel Hill's Feeding the Fire. This local band caught Henry's and Quin's attention when they performed in the Fitch lumber parking lot at the Carrboro Music Festival. We haven't figure out how to have an electric band perform live in the studio, but we're working on it. In the meantime, we can play cuts from their CD during the interview.

We're hoping to have Amber Dutton and perhaps Jeremy Bellion perform in early November.

The Daily Tarheel is doing a story on us and is supposed to be sending a photographer today to take a picture. We're expecting the article to appear during the week of October 23rd.

CHCCS deciding that next year's juniors had to attend the new Carrboro High School if that is their assigned school. Next year's seniors can stay at their current school if they want. Do you think that is the fair decision? We tried to get some callers to call in with their opinion on that last week, but nobody called. Sadness.

Music Ramblings

We have an AIM address for all of you that don't get the whole IRC chat client thing. Anyway, we can be reached via AIM at wcomteenspirit at all times during the show, and periodically throughout the week.

Yeah, I know the Carrboro Music Fest is old news, but me and Quinn saw this pretty cool band in our free time last week. They're called "Feeding The Fire" and they have a myspace, like most other bands. Basically, they're an indie rock band with a bit of an earthy twist, kinda like anyone else you might see at Weaver Street. They had their music down so well that they could do whatever they wanted on stage, which made for a very high energy performance, in the middle of a parking lot, no less. They have one LP out, "Naked to the Invisible Eye. But yeah, I encourage you all to check them out.

Thoughts on the 10-1 show

It sounds good when we have two or more mics/DJs talking.

We need to talk more - announcing songs, bantering, humor, telling listeners who and what Teen Spirit is, encouraging them to call in, visit the blog, go to the chat room, etc.

Rule of thumb: three songs without talking should be the max.

Quickly identify yourself..."This is Quinn. I've got a PSA about the Shakori Hills Festival..."
- develop an on-air personality where regular listeners know your voice and your style and interests.

We need to bring humor/local interest stuff to the studio so we have some content to read work with.

Someone should put mIRC/chat room instructions here on the blog.

Sound mix is strange but works pretty well. I think our target audience is more interested in hearing more new R&B/hip-hop and less old rock (Guns and Roses, Pink Floyd, Survivor).

Great show, by the way! I especially noticed how well y'all were working together.
